Salt-Away for D4 260hp Engine Flush

Is it okay to flush my C28 Volvo-Penta D4 260hp engine for 10 minutes with fresh water and then introduce the 500:1 diluted Salt-Away for 30 seconds until I see the foam exiting the exahaust, and then stopping the engine; leaving the Salt-Away in the engine? Until now, I've just been flushing for 10 minutes with fresh water. I'd like to start using Salt-Away to help protect the inside of the engine from corrosion.

I have been using Salt away for years and also on our new CW since bringing the boat home last November. We have probably launched into salt at least a dozen times now. Also, I use it to flush the reverse cycle heat/A/C if Ihave used it before loading. Since Ronnie from Bellingham Yachts was looking over my shoulder when I recently did this in Everett and seems to love the stuff too I figure we are pretty safe.

What is your method of flushing? Are you flushing in the water or on the trailer? I have used vinegar but after reading several other blogs and reviews the Salt Away gets many positive comments.

As for:

From what I've read, Salt-Away is non-hazardous, non-toxic, and biodegradable.

Whatever marina does not allow flushing with Salt-A-Way might be concerned about this statement in the detailed MSDS:

"Water hazard class 1 (Self-assessment): Avoid undiluted product to reach ground water, water course or sewage system not connected to filtration systems."

I flush the engine on the trailer. For the AC I close the sea cock and flush in the water either hooked up to shore power or with the Honda gen.

I've used Salt Away for a couple of years. My initial concern was the impeller even though they state it is safe. When I change the impeller it is always like new so Salt Away does not harm the rubber. I generally flush the engine, let it sit for 24 hours then flush with fresh water unless I am using the boat.
I also use it in the A/C and generator.

I used Salt-Away just once at my Marina. After washing the boat down I was concerned about all the white froth milling around the boat and the dock fairway. There was so much of it I wondered if I had misused the Salt-Away product. In addition, other boater across the fairway gave me some very dirty looks so I asked my Marina Operation's people about the Salt-Away and was it safe to use in the Marina.... they told me in no uncertain terms not to use it as they try to maintain a 'clean' marina policy in order to get certification for being one. Since this event, I refrain from using the Salt-Away product in my Marina even though I have to say it did a very good job in getting the boat clean.

I looked over the MSDS sheet for Salt-Away and it appears to be pretty much inert to everything. Not sure why there was a reaction to it's use but given the level of pollution in our waters these days, who knows what it reacted to. Up here I use it to spray down my trailer after launching/retrieving as there are no fresh water wash-down option nearby. Never had any kind of reaction like what has been described in the parking lot.
