Hi

We purchased a 2015 C30 this year from Port Boat House in Port Alberni (fantastic crew to deal with). The boat is in great condition however the Teak and Holly cabin floor near the galley needs to be re-sealed. Can anyone tell me what product to use on this?

Thanks

Simon

As one who toiled as a professional in the hardwood flooring industry in a former life, I would recommend a careful light sanding, thorough solvent-wiping with denatured alcohol, and application of at least three light coats of a qualitymarine spar varnish. That location is subjected to quite a bit of traffic and moisture on an active boat.

Thanks very much Vertigo!

In addition to Vertigo’s great advice, On our R29S I caulked the seams. I did this to keep crud and moisture from getting into that space. I was mostly concerned with the moisture from liquid spills and tracking in water getting into the seam and working its way under the flooring.

Good information.
Jim F- What product did you use to "caulk" the seams and sides of the Teak and Holly? On a floor, I assume you want something that cures to rather firm state.

Thanks!!

I used a DAP product called Dynaflex 230 in a color called Cedar Tan. Can be purchased at most big box or major hardware stores. As prep I cleaned the flooring and taped off both sides of the seams, which took most of the time, before the application.

Thanks Jim. That’s a great tip!

Thanks for the product recommendation Jim. I don't understand why the factory doesn't have tighter gap between the flooring and the fibreglass which they then seal. We spend so much time getting the crud out from that space.

We are having the same problem on our 2013 R25sc. Water and dirt has worked its way under the edges of the sole, and it is now lifting up. The more it lifts, the further the crud creeps under. Can this be cleaned and re-attached or do we need to lift the entire sole? Can it be peeled off safely without doing damage, and what would we use to re-attach it?

For a really outstanding sealant that will outlast the flooring itself, try this moisture-cure polyurethane SikaFlex product: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sikaflex-10-1-oz-Dark-Bronze-Construction-Sealant-515310/207086490. I use this stuff extensively for direct-setting trimless window frames into timber openings in new modular homes that I build for delivery to remote high-exposure waterfront locations. It's almost identical to the Sikaflex product that is commonly used for direct-glazing on new high-end boats. It'll never shrink, crack or peel.

When it comes to caulking, always start with the best.

Rocky Look into the DAP 230 but Almond color It matches the fiberglass perfectly. I tried the cedar and it is close to the holly floor but stands out between the two colors of the floor and fiberglass so it is noticeable.

Cheers

I used Clear Boat Life. Taped both sides of the seams. Used a wet finger to smooth the bead line. A dry cloth to wipe the finger. Used one 80ml tube of Clear Boat Life. Complete fill seams, wiping off the excess; otherwise, gaps will occur in the bead line.

We tried the DAP 230 Dynaflex in the floor gap, but after a season we are not impressed. The color match of Almond is good. But the sealant did not hold on. Now we are going to play with a Boat Life polyurethane in brown. Has anyone else found somehing good?

This spring I resealed with Boat Life Life Seal in Cameo, available on Amazon.ca. The colour match is good, with painters tape the product was easy to lay in. I'll give another update in the fall 2023.

I forgot to add that I waited 3 hours then pulled the painter tape off.
