Is a thru hull transducer located the shower sump the best location on a cutwater 28? transducer choices for fishing?

Mikey,
Yes, I believe the thru hull transducer is in the best location because of the stepped hull. I just added a Garmin GT56UHD Transom mount transducer to my C28 (fairly easy installation). I won't be able to test/adjust it until spring. There really isn't an ideal location for the location for the transducer, however for me I will use it at trolling speeds under 5 kts and hopefully there won't be much prop turbulence. I mounted mine starboard of the prop where there weren't any thru hull fittings or chines, clear of my trailer bunks. I know others have put on an additional TM transducer and had success. My C28 is a 2021, I'm not sure of the year of your C28 but make sure that your plotter has an additional 12 pin transducer input. Your thru hull transducer is an 8 pin. Newer plotters should have a 12 pin. I hope this helps.

According to what I was advised by Cutwater, a thru hull must be mounted 1 foot in front of the forward step.

The area where the in hull, GT15M is mounted is acceptable, but, I don't know if there's ample room there for another install.

I'm looking at getting a B175chw (high wide) or m (medium) installed during winter maintenance haul out. However, my Garmin dealer wants to see the boat before we agree to move forward. I've spent too much time thinking about this already and if I don't get a clear answer, I'm going to stay with the GT15M and use better bait. I really wish there was an appropriate, and well documented, solution for fishing given how the boats are configured.

Mikey,
Noting you are in BC, another Cutwater C302 owner had one installed in front of the step by: https://www.portboathouse.com

The sump location is best for a thru hull transducer, which is used for depth. That location on a C28 has a solid fiberglass pad without filler, and has low turbulence. It is ok for simple sonar (called 2D ping) but not suitable for churp or side-looking transducers. For that I tried mounting a second transducer off the swim platform on a short pipe and attached to a separate fishfinder. Unfortunately the turbulence at speed just ripped the transducer off its holder and broke the cable. (easy to underestimate the power of turbulent water flow at 20 knots.) I bought another and attached it on the starboard rear, just behind/under the step of the hull. That has stayed on and worked fine for speeds below 10 knots.

I am planing to drill a hole in shower sump pump area to mount a thru hull for better detail for fishing, bottom detail. Anyone have experience doing this and suggestions for a transducer?

I'm scheduled for service on the 15th December when my Garmin guy will check to see if there is an area to install the transducer I picked, a B175chw (high wide). The area where my sump is located is also the area where the GT 15 is installed and it doesn't look like there's much room there.

I can report after he sees the boat.
