Useless searchlights no more!

[Epilogue]

Search lights - We have all agreed they are pretty useless due to the way they are mounted on our tugs and the resultant flare we get off the foredeck when aimed anywhere but up. I am pleased to offer, free of charge, to any who wish it, the solution I have come up with: And simple sheet of anything (I have a picture showing it, I don't know how to include it in this message.) taped under the light and exended about 5 or 6 inches. I plan during lay up to have a piece of stainless made that I can screw into the body of the light. It does work folks! I will submit a photo is someone will tel me how!

A much safer method is to send a PM to the member you want to contact.

Getting a User Photo Album for your Ranger Tug is easy but it requires submitting a request from within the site structure.

1. Sign on to the site, if you aren't already.

2. Select the User Control Panel link from the upper left corner of any page. Note: On the home page, this link is in your user menu.

3. Click the Usergroups tab, then select the radio button next to the User Albums group.
Scroll down, choose "Join selected" in the drop-down menu, and click the Submit button.

Once you do this, an email is automatically sent to the administrator (me). That message will trigger my ability to approve your request, and you'll receive an email indicating your membership in the User Albums group has been activated.

I'll watch for the message, and look forward to seeing your pictures.

Folks - I will send the emails to those of you who requested it - and of course, will surely not share your addresses with anyone! for the others who are interested, I will endeavor to set up picture permission thru Bruce and will try to post a pic of the RUDIMENTARY test mock up I made the other day to try my idea. Satisfied that it would work, a metal shop is fabricating my "shield" from stainless and once completed and installed (hopfully before winter layup) I will get a photo out to the site. it appears the competed cost will be in the area of $20-25 - Cheaper than duplicating with another handheld torch.

My point was that anyone who views this website can use that e-mail address for whatever purpose they can, including putting it on all sorts of solicitation lists. If you have ever noticed the kind of folks who put product advertizing on here, or encourage "friendships" on line, it should be obvious that posting an e-mail address or phone number "in the clear" on the site is not to your advantage. And they went to the trouble to create an account. And there are folks who view websites just looking for stuff like that.

But then again, some folks like getting those e-mail messages for Viagra and steroids, and getting all those multi-million-dollar settlement letters from African "solicitors" concerning your uncle's legacy or funds tied up in the USA that you can claim by sending in only $10,000 to pay the fees to free the money. :lol:

Bruce's point is the same as mine. The addresses are available by other means for legitimate users (and the guys who post the kind of thing I mentioned are weeded out rapidly by the administrators). And PM can always be used with a much better level of privacy.

Curious as to why this works. Does it restrict the beam spread and therefore not hit the railings?

the shield works by flattening out the bottom of the beam - when in flood mode - and thus keeps it from reflecting off the foredeck - it does touch the forward most part of the rail but it's not a problem to me. In spot mode, I did not notice any reflection. I think you just have to adjust the shield a bit to find where it will accomplish what you are looking for. Use the cardboard mock up like I did and move it around until you find the right spot for it. good luck!

Depending on how sealed the searchlight is, one might want to add a couple drain holes to the deflector pan to prevent water buildup if its tilted upward. Has anyone tried masking out or painting the lower part of the lens to narrow the beam? sort of like they used to do on military vehicle headlamps.
