What is this behind the prop?

See the photos in my boat album, the bronze/green casing that is around the shaft and sticking out from the hull. What is this, and is it supposed to be sticking out like that? Thanks!

Looks like the end of the cutlass bearing. Could be normal but mine is flush.

Definitely not part of the stuffing box. The stuffing box is inside the engine compartment. If I were a betting man I would say that it is the cutless bearing that for some reason was not inserted flush. If you also look, there is a set screw. That help lock the bearing in. The good part is that if it ever has to be removed you may be able to grab the end to get it out. Usually you have to use a slip hammer or cut through the sides to collapse it to extract.
