My port windshield wiper failed last night, right in the middle of a nighttime cruse on the Columbia river. The symptoms were a little odd and very concerning.
I was using the wipers intermittently for about an hour when the wiper travel reduced by about half, then eventually stopped altogether. The indicator light on the helm switch stayed lit on all three settings (low speed, off, high speed)
Here is the concerning part, when I got back to my slip, I checked the wiper motor and it was very hot to the touch (blistering) even after being in the off position for over an hour. Since the boat was going to be unattended over the weekend, I pulled the fuse going to the 4 switch group on the helm and it eventually cooled down
No fuses were blown or circuit breakers tripped
So now I need a replacement wiper motor before the next Christmas ship cruise on Tuesday night (yes, it does rain here in Portland)
