Yanmar 4BY and 6BY Information

I have downloaded the manual. Send me your email address via PM and I will send it to you.

This a valuable thread and here’s a bit of information to help keep it alive.

The Yanmar parts manual for the 4BY2 lists as variants the -150, -180, -150Z, and -180Z. The data plate on my engine lists the engine type as a 4BY2-180, but I was curious what was the difference between the -180 and -180Z. Yesterday, I finally found out what it is from a technician at Mastry Engine Center in St. Petersburg: The “Z” variant is equipped with a Bravo sterndrive. I never thought about a diesel-powered sterndrive, but guess the RPM range at which these engines operate would make that possible. Anyway, now you know!

This is off line of the thread but adds to Bill's comment about diesel powered stern drives.

Actually the smaller displacement diesels are well suited for the sterndrive application. I had the pleasure of operating a Yanmar powered Sweet 16 Donzi in 2000. The owner purchased it in Florida and used it on the Illinois River. It was a 125 hp 4JH-3 1.995L Yanmar coupled to an Alpha Mercruiser. I remember the owner stating the engine burned under 2 gph @ 20mph. Topped at 40 mph.

Subject: After Market Secondary Fuel Filter

I have been researching an aftermarket alternative for the Yanmar 120651-55020 2-micron secondary filter for a 2012 Yanmar 4BY2-180 in an R27 Classic.

I wanted a true 2-micro filter and found that some of the cross-referenced filters were fit and form compatible but were in fact 10-micron filters. So do check the specs carefully if you are installing a non-Yanmar secondary fuel filter.

I recently found a Racor 2-micron spin on secondary filter that is only available in Europe. Its part number is R90-DS-RAC-01 (parker racor fuel filter).

Question: Has anyone evaluated this filter as an aftermarket equivalent?

I have ordered one on eBay and will share my findings once I receive it. Delivery was 3 weeks from the UK.
