Started Yanmar engine 4BY2-150 today and the Yanmar engine display posted a message as shown below....

Sys Change Detected
Set Monitor up for
Classic?

There was a YES and a NO soft button available to select.

Any one know what this means.

I did chat with Andrew about this and he said he's seen this before and quite honestly does not know what it means. He suggested discussing with a Yamar technician to get the full story.

I did turn engine off without selecting anything, and maybe a few minutes later started engine again. No message as before was displayed.

I think the 4BY's have the same display as the 6BY's so if it is the i5601E display, the software automatically sets itself for your particular engine series. You can manually select the type of engine you have and I did that when we were trying to sort out all of the lightning strike issues. The software probably woke up on the wrong side of the bed so you did the right thing by just shutting it off. It took me awhile to find out that I had the 6BY "Sport" as there are no labels or manual ID's to tell you what you have. The clue was I have manual shift and electronic throttle which is the "Sport"
The i5601E Display manual is available online if you want to find out all the stuff you can do at the display.

The only info I could find in the Yanmar manuals with the search criteria being "Classic" was

The Yanmar Electronic Control Systems manual is the one with the system detect info. The cover has the various engine listings. On my i5601E you access the menu by turning the key on, not starting the engine and depressing and holding the far right key until the menu appears. There will be three options: "ALARM/DIAGs; MONITOR SETTINGS; and FACTORY SETTINGS." Use the down arrow to scroll to the "FACTORY SETTINGS" MENU. You will have to enter the PASS CODE which unless changed by your tech is 3124 (default code). You will then see the settings menu. The "System Selection" option is set either auto or manual. I would assume that yours is set on "Auto" and thus the reason for the "System Change Detected" message. Not sure why that would occur unless something new was added to the system or a power surge generated the message. When you have seen what you want to see, turn the key off and no harm done. I have set mine on "Manual" select because of all of my problems after my lightning strike. The manual listed above tells you how to set up the hot key quad screens to your liking and then lock them so they come up with each start. You probably know all of this but thought I would provide the info just in case. I did not like the factory default settings so my screens reflect my particular monitoring habits.

Pat:
Thank you. 🙂

I find that I do not have the Yanmar Electronic Control Systems manual on my computer. I have most of the Yanmar manuals on my iPhone and 17" MacBook Pro, but not that one. I'll have to goto boat to see if its in my manual case. I recall way back when first buying the R25 I had to program/configure the Yanmar i5601E display, but have not touched it since.

[EDIT]
Found it online at http://www.yanmaritalia.it/amminist...f/108/6LY3 Operation (MANOPLYM01) Rev 3.0.pdf

Pat, I have been trying to get that manual. If you have an electronic version, it would be great if you e-mailed it to me mrizzo8743@all.com. Or if you can direct me to a link that would be great.
Thanks,
Mike Rizzo

I sent Email with link to you Mike.

[EDIT] My Email to you aborted.... 😱 However, I did post the link in my last post to Pat.

One thing I forgot to tell you is that Yanmar techs can update your display software. The current version lets you read the diagnostic codes and gives you a code count. You don't need the passcode to access that menu.

I managed to quickly capture the Software version as the i5601E turned on with the engine being started (you have to be quick). It was Ver 3.00P.

The version we upgraded to after the strike is 4.01P. I think they use a flash drive to update but not sure how. They just sent the new version with the display after the original got fried.

Fat finger error on my part. The e-mail was wrong. Correct one is mrizzo8743@aol.com

Mike: I found that I was not authorized to print the Yanmar Electronic Control Systems manual on my computer. The PDF file is protected presumably. So if you have the same issue be sure to keep the electronic version safe and make a backup of it.

I wonder if the new module being sent out with the service bulletin has the software update to read the codes.

Mike: What Service Bulletin are you referring to ? Thanks. 🙂

There is a service bulletin out that has two things that need to be done for the BY engines. 1) the ground wire from the oil sending unit needs to be replaced and attached to the paddle wheel ground wire, which is identified on the cable at the wire harness. 2) The entire black box on the port bulkhead gets swapped out with a newly programmed one. This should eliminate all the erroneous fluctuations in oil pressure, etc. that some of us are getting.

I need a link ref to this service bulletin if that's possible, so I can contact my engine service technician for advice. Any help with this is much appreciated. 🙂

I have not had any signs of oil pressure fluctuations to date, but then you never know when things can happen.

[EDIT]
OK.... found it at http://www.tugnuts.com/gallery2.php?g2_itemId=38759&g2_imageViewsIndex=1

Yanmar America Service Advisory
Advisory Number: YASA2014-005-M
Date: Aug 11, 2014
"Low Oil Pressure Nuisance Alarm / Oil Pressure Fluctuation"

Thanks Howard.... Have contacted my Yanmar service who will now investigate what to do and how to handle this.

I was able to talk with a Yanmar Electronics Dept. Tech help person today. His name is Duane and can be reached at 941-350-4196. He was very helpful about explaining this message.

First we determined that I do have the "Classic" setup.

The cause of the message is very likely due to the engine being started while the ECU was busy doing 'house keeping' stuff and that it was simply a timing issue that caused the message to display. The correct thing to do was to simply ignore the message and turn engine off and wait a minute or two and restart it.

This can happen if the engine is started/stopped/started/stopped etc repeatedly. I was doing this trying to detect if water was being ejected out of the exhaust/muffler drain plug.

Apparently the "Classic" mode can be altered by entering the Yanmar i5601E's display menu system at any time.

Issue/problem solved. 🙂

On my i506E Yanmar Display it shows speed as one of 4 items on one of the display screens however it has never shown the speed. Have others been able to get "speed" to show up on their i506E display with there Yanmar engine? I have it on the Garmin display but there are times when it would be nice to have the speed show up on the i506E display. Any advice?
