It has finally arrived. For all of you out there with Garmin units and a Yanmar 150hp or 260hp, this update is worth the download! I have been working with Yanmar and garmin for a long time to find out how to display oil pressure on your garmin chartplotter. Well this update will correct that issue! They have put together some software that makes this happen. They have also added some more user friendly features to the garmin autopilot functions. Click this link to download and update your chartplotter to the latest version.

We did it the day after it came out on Larry's new R 29 . It worked perfectly and was very impressive with the data available on any screen you want it on . Technology marches on !

Andrew, what have they done to enhance the display of information for Cummins engines?

Sounds great!!!! Is there a procedure that works for Mac OS X?

Andrew: Thanks very much for posting this info.

Hey Bruce: Could do as before and take the *.exe download and create the SD card on your PC for me ? As you know, I'm a Mac family and have no personal WinPCs around.

Barry,
Send me a PM with your mailing address and I will mail you the one I used to update mine.

Unfortunately, Garmin is way behind in accommodating OS X users in their Marine division. You can't even download a firmware update without using a WIndows machine, even though agnostic download tools are pretty common. Nor can you run their excellent new desktop application "HomePort" which allows you to create routes and markers at home for later use on your boat. Last time I contacted them I was told they've created a team to work on porting Marine products to OS X, but no timeline was forthcoming.

Those of us in the OS X world can keep the pressure on. Contact Garmin Support and ask them to support you substantial investment in Garmin equipment.

Meanwhile, if you don't have access to a windows machine, PM me with a mailing address and I'll start a list of folks so we can forward a card around.

Cheers,

Bruce

Does the Garmin run on a Linux OS ?
I ask as the largest file /Garmin/gupdate.gcd (some 280.7 MB in size) in this update is a Unix executable file.

/Volumes/1GB-STICK/autorun.inf
/Volumes/1GB-STICK/Garmin
/Volumes/1GB-STICK/SGPortable
/Volumes/1GB-STICK/SGPortable.lnk

I managed to download and copy the files to a USB memory stick on a WinPC laptop running Win XP Professional. I then transferred them from this USB memory stick to a 1GB SD card using my Mac Pro.

I then was able to dig out from the dusty draw a USB-to-SD card dongle. So inserted this into the WinPC laptop's USB port and was able to direct the Garmin unzip process to this and was able to get a completed SD card without using my Mac Pro. I will check the card out this weekend to see if it will update my Garmin software on my R25. I'll post back the experience. 😉

Garmin adds the following best practice for doing the software updates

-An SD card with 300MB of free space is needed for this update.
-Please back up your user data before applying the update.

Was able to find the changes Garmin made from version 5.2 to 5.9 -- for those interested.... 🙂

Note the Yanmar support changes made between version 5.80 to 5.90 -- Confirms what Andrew indicated. 😀

Changes made from version 5.80 to 5.90:
Added support for outputting cross-track error over NMEA0183 with up to three decimal places of precision.
Added support for outputting MARPA target tracking messages over NMEA0183.

Fixed issues with map sharing between networked units
Fixed 3d chart issues near anti-meridian
Fixed 2d chart issues when zoomed out near Canary Islands
Fixed display of cranes on charts
Fixed display of intertidal heights on charts
Corrected issue that caused some map areas to be shaded incorrectly. This issue is most likely seen as large areas filled with solid brown.

Changed safety shading control to be a user data entry field.
Added support for Portuguese fishing areas.

I updated my Garmin 5212 from v5.2 to v5.9 today. It took 5 mins to update the Garmin autopilot and another 5 mins to update the 5212. It installed without issues.

With the engine ignition key in the accessories position the Yanmar data was shown to be available. I setup a "Combination" screen display to show the Yanmar digital data in the right hand side black bar -- see photos below. This black vertical bar normally shows only GPS Speed, Depth and GPS Heading. By tapping an area in the black bar below the "GPS Heading" a blue box appears and one is presented with "Engine 1". Press/tapping "Engine 1" will then list all the Yanmar engine data that is available. Select the one you want and it will display below the "GPS Heading" digital readout. One keeps doing this until all the black side bar is occupied with Yanmar digital readout data.

The last "Engine 1" -> "Fuel" readout I opted to display was the "Remaining" fuel -- not a very good readout IMO. 🙁

Note that a full screen display can be setup to display all the "Engine 1" data in digital or analog form (round dials) if you want that. I forgot to capture a photo shot of either of these. 😉

I cranked the engine up to ensure the Yanmar engine dynamic data displayed correctly -- and it did. 😀

This digital Yanmar engine data on the Garmin display screen in the right hand side vertical black bar sure beats having to stoop down and squint at the small square Yanmar stock display -- especially in bright daylight.

One note -- The Yanmar "Engine 1" available data indicated the Trim information could be displayed. However, I was unable to get it to display anything, even though it displayed a side view of a boat silhouette with trim tabs deployed -- shame if it's not available -- maybe others can post back the error of my ways... 😉 Is this "Trim"/"Tilt" related to an engine that tilts maybe ?

Barry,
Great tips!!!!!
Thanks!

Karma:
Some of those tips came from Andrew who happened to be IN Canada no less delivering an R-29. That guy should have his pay doubled IMO. The critical advice from Andrew was for me to put the engine ignition key to the Accessories position.

I am not sure that I could disagree with Barry on this one! Great idea!

Help!!!! I have tried to download the update to a SanDisk 4 GB chip and either I am doing something wrong or the computer is not reading the chip. The chip is in an unlocked position and the green light shows, but it won't accept the update. Any ideas on what I can try?

What is the format of the 4GB card -- it should be a MS-DOS (FAT16) or maybe a (FAT32) format.

I just tried an 8GB Kingston SDHC card and formatted it MS-DOS (FAT32) and the Garmin updater wrote to the card successfully.

The Garmin updater will create a folder at the card's root level named Garmin and within this folder there should be a file named gupdate.gcd with a size of 274,149 KB. This file is a Unix executable and is what the Garmin chart plotter requires to perform the software update.

My system is Win XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3.

Also, don't encrypt the card. If your MS Win system insists on encrypting it just uncheck that box and click OK.

If you're still having a problem I can bring over my SD card tomorrow sometime as you are but 2 miles from me.

The SD HC (high capacity) 4gb card would not physically insert into my rather new computer or my D700 Nikon camera... Got a plain vanilla SD 2gb card (not HC) and it went like gangbusters...
Don't know if the 5.9 upgrade added anything to my Garmin 4212 operating system that I need, but it probably can't hurt... I turned it on after the upgrade (at the dock) and it looked just like before, but does say 2010 and 5.9 on the information screen so I assume the update loaded...

Nita, call me or stop by the plant. We'll put it on your chip or you can borrow mine..

FYI...
Andrew told me the "Engine 1" -> "Tilt" function is not applicable for the R25. It's used my stern drive engines that tilt.
