Garmin G3 Chip

I spoke with Garmin support just yesterday. There is a known problem with the download of the new G3 Vision maps, with many owners reporting the download just stops part way through. Garmin has posted on their website that they are working on a solution, but no predicted cure date is provided.

My call was to confirm (as I was told by the Garmin rep at the SWF Rendezvous) that I would be provided the G3 Vision card at no cost, having just purchased the G2 Vision card in Oct. Garmin support first asked if I had registered both my chartplotter, a 7212 (which I had) and G2 Vision card (which I had not). Garmin support then told me that once I register my G2 Vision card, I would be able to download the G3 maps for free.

Since I already had autorouting from the G2 Vision card, Garmin support says the only changes I will see after the download will be the Navionics chart information/improved maps.

Gordon, I was at the Garmin seminar at the SWF Rendezvous also. My memory gets short when a lot of information is presented so I may be wrong in this statement. Did the Garmin Rep at the Rendezvous state" Hold off "from purchasing the G3 Maps until March or after because there would be additional benefits in the mapping and all the "Bugs" should be worked out with the updated G3 maps? At the time there was a G3 map available but he advised not purchasing it yet. I have been anxious to purchase the new mapping with Navionic charts with auto Guidance. I have not had Vision cards so all my auto routing has been done by me pre-routing destinations.

I purchased and received the new US chart G3 HXUS604X from Hodges Marine. I installed the chip in my Garmin 7212. The chart plotter booted up and displayed the boat location as expected.

When I tried to use the 'Navigate to' function, the course line shown is only the strait line 'Go To' line.
I am on land in my driveway so I don't know if the chart chip has 'Navigate to' auto routing or not.

Has anyone installed and used the new chart chip on a 7212 chartplotter?

Does it work to auto route?

Thanks,

Brian,

Your recollection of the conversation with the Garmin rep at the SWF Rendezvous is consistent with mine. He suggested that we not purchase/update to the G3 Vision card until sometime in March because additional map detail (the "Navionics data") wouldn't be available until then.

As it turns out, the G3 Vision download wasn't available (at least for me) until earlier this week. When I first tried to download it after registering my G2 Vision card (see my last post), Garmin Express told me "No updates available". I called Garmin support and was told that they were rolling the G3 Vision update out gradually and the update would show up "soon". He was right -- last Monday the "No Update Available" in Garmin Express changed to "Update Available".

However, I've now run into the problem others have reported with the download -- it stops downloading partway through (right at 67%) and reports "download error". I've tried multiple times, following all the suggestions on Garmin's support page, with no luck so far. I'm waiting to pick up a new/different SD card, the last Garmin support suggestion remaining, before trying again.

I'll report back if/when I'm successful.

My guess is that because the boat is on land the auto route / safe route cannot be calculated by the Garmin software. It needs to know your starting depth and all the depths alongl the way to the destination position in order to compute a 'safe course' line. I had this issue even being in my slip at low tide and trying to establish a 'safe course' using my G2 Vision card, so suspect the G3 has same issue.

Baz,

Thank you for the reply.
I am going to put the old chip back into the plotter to see what it does. The old chip did do auto routing last summer.
I will report back later.

A new version of Garmin Express was released over the weekend. It solved the problem I was having with the G3 Vision map failing to download completely.

I updated all of my software and upgraded to the BlueChart g3 this weekend using ActiveCaptain. Most of the process went well, except:

1. The CB plotter accesses the new BlueChart g3 data from the lower helm plotter, but I am getting an error saying the new chart is not compatible with the built-in chart. The error only happens on the CB and, when it's cleared, everything at both stations operates fine. I tried to download the new chart to the chartplotter, however, the 7612xsv and 7612 don't have enough memory, so the new BlueChart g3 card will need to remain in the plotter to use the new charts. Garmin support asked me to swap card locations from the lower helm to the CB to see if the error moves, too, but I haven't tried it yet.

2. The software update to the VHF 210 caused the CB GHS 11 handset to not function. The GHS 11 is not a standalone radio and relies on the VHF 210 to operate. The system software update caused the two units to not be in synch. There is a procedure on the Garmin support site to get them back in synch (https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=L ... tab=topics). It requires going to the Garmin update page, downloading the system update to an SD card and then using that card to force the radio synch update once the GHS 11 handset is set up to receive it. Reinstalling a previous update done through ActiveCaptain has to be done with an SD card, there's no way to redo it through the app. Haven't tried it yet, either.

can you copy the contents of the G3 SD card to another blank SD card and install in the second plotter?

I have the same question about the g3 software as Cutwater28GG - will it work smoothly on the GPSMAP 5212. Tried to call Garmin support this morning with my questions but it was a 2.5 hour wait in queue....

I have the "Canada card" to go with my GPSMap 5212 running g2 software updated to v7.80 in 2015. With the "Canada" card you get an Auto Guidance feature which I constantly use. In general it's OK but just not great. Tends to run you right by the rocks when changing course around an island even with the minimum depth setting at 80 ft. It has some specific location quirks too. It absolutely hates Gabriola Pass. Even if you are within 1 mile of entering the Gabriola Pass, auto guidance will plot a course through Portier Pass 20 miles away. Auto Guidance doesn't like the Port of Bellingham either - refuses to chart a course to it even from 1 mile out. At Skyline Marina in Anacortes, it runs you right into and over the beach about a 1/2 mile west of the harbor entrance.

For cruising from Olympia to The Broughton's I'm torn between getting the basic g3 HXUS604X full USA + Canadian West Coast or the fancy g3 Vision Inside-Outside Passage CA018R software. For those getting either one of these, what feature(s) made the difference in your purchase decision?

I have an update on 1. and 2. above...

1. Garmin support is still working this. I swapped the chart card between stations and the error still came up on the CB chartplotter.

2. I used the procedure in the link to update the GHS 11 handset and it worked. There is some magic involved by having to do the same 8 step procedure twice, but it gets you there.

Last week end I opened Garmin Express and the new BlueChart G3+ LakeVu G3 Built-in was available for purchase $99.00. I purchased it, inserted a 32GB SD card in my MacBook Pro and downloaded it with no issues. I removed my old SD card from the 7612xsv and installed the newly downloaded SD card and loaded to the chart plotter without issue ( It must stay in the plotter). I downloaded a second card to be used with Garmin Homeport on my MacBook Pro and also downloaded the BlueChart G3 mapping on my iPad using the Active Captain app. It seems that Garmin is slowing getting it all put together. The Garmin Active Captain site activecaptain.garmin.com has much better mapping now looks to have Navionics maps. The new BlueChart G3 LakeVu G3 has much more detail compared to the G2. I look forward to putting it to use this summer with some planned trips.

Brian: Thanks for posting all that stuff.....also good to know the Apple MBP can be used for downloading to the SD card and that the SD card data was compatible with the Chart Plotter. 🙂

I am having trouble with the 2019 update for my 7212 plotter.
I downloaded the update from Garmin and installed it on an SD card.
The computer shows the update as being on the SD card. (349MB)
When I put the SD card into the Garmin, it does not recognize the update as being on the card. it shows that nothing is on the card.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

If your 7212 has 2 SD card slots use the other one and see if it becomes discoverable.... just a thought. 🙂

That is a good idea, but I only have the one slot.

Make sure the capacity of the card is no more than 32G. The 7212 won’t recognize anything larger.

I have not had any luck with my 7212 chartplotter in getting the new chart chip to work. The chip is a Garmin HXUS604X.

I resolved the software update problem I was having and my software is all updated.

When I insert the new G3 chip the chartploter loads the charts fine.

Everything works EXCEPT the auto routing function. The old G2 Vision chart chip does provide the auto routing function, even while the boat is on the trailer on land. The new G3 chip does not show the auto routing option.

Can anyone help with this?

Hi Larry,

My G3 chip was not showing “Guide to” on one trip. I just reinserted the chip and it came back. Poor contact I assume.
