Points North - Cruising on your Ranger Tug

Hmmm -- just realized my iPad's Charts&Tides does not cover much north on Vancouver. 🙁

Where's best place to order/purchase charts for north of the USA border ? (for this cruise). Thanks...

Barry & Gill --- Both West Marine and Fisheries Supply normally have a good collection of charts and chart books, but if you want the best help and advice I would suggest Captain's Nautical in Interbay just off 15th ave.W. Once you have discovered this store you will never go anywhere else.

Zuma -

Small "tug world". . . the Laurie Ann was at Discovery Harbour Marina just last Thursday. Take a look at the boat ramp just to the north of the fuel dock and the fishing fleet and you'll see where we launched and retrieved the boat. Nice marina and very convenient to lots of shopping - especially food for those two boys of yours!

Since Factory stock Garmin chartplotter 5212 provides chart info up to the Canadian boarder I wish to obtain a g2 Vision SD card that provides chart data up to just north of Desolation Sound as a minimum.

I've located the following two g2 Vision SD cards that are compatible with my Garmin 5212.

Garmin BlueChart g2 Vision LARGE Puget Sound to Port Hardy Pre-Programmed SD Card at $369.99 from http://www.tigergps.com/garminbluechartvca500.html

and

Garmin BlueChart g2 Vision Inside Passage Pre-Programmed SD Card at $269.99 from http://www.tigergps.com/garminbluechartvca001.html

Since there's a big $100 difference here I wonder which one is best for my purposes. The firsts one at $369.99 covers a much larger area and goes from Port Hardy in the north to as far south as Olympia WA. The second one is for a smaller area and presumably is the reason for it being less expensive.

Any advice is welcomed... thanks. 🙂

Barry,
Lyman on Zuma as well as I have both updated our plotters using the $269.99 card. Lyman and Jeneane are currently up in the Campbell River area and have not reported having any issues with the card. My vote, for what it is worth, go with the $269.99 card.

Thanks - I ordered the $269 card

Since we are limited to how much alcohol we can take into Canada (wine, beer, etc.), is there a place we can purchase additional supply? Can we do this at Gibsons or at Kim and Tim's grocery store????

Nita

There was a liquor store at Poets, also in Ganges, and Victoria. I would assume there is one in Gibsons.

There is a liquor store in Gibsons, you can also purchase beer and wine at Gorge Harbour on Cortes Island and Refuge Cove Store on West Redonda in the Desolation Sound area!

For what it's worth -- here's an ActiveCaptain review for Gibsons....

Are we docking or anchoring at Gibsons ?

Barry,
We will be docking in Gibsons. That is why Tim needed the name and length of all vessels that would be attending. This will be our last night in a marina. The following night we will be on Hardy Island and then onto Desolation Sound!

We have had a couple of boat issues of late but they seem to be rectified. We are preparing for Points North. At the present time we are choosing the original idea of heading for LaConner rather than going to Port Townsend. We will then meet ya'all in Poet's Cove on August 20th, Rosalie's ( ) birthday. Yep -- it all sounds exciting. I'm trying to get Gill excited as well. I'm sure she is but is not letting on. 😉 She's now off visiting Evergreen Hospital for Chemo treatment (has been off the transfusion for nearly 3 weeks now). She is having to use blood thinning medicine to resolve an issue with having a port in her chest for 3 months but that regiment is now down to once per day and hopefully will be down to once per week by Aug 19th. Her treatment has the highest priority for me at this time.

We have the Points North Cruise starting Aug 19th, then a 5 day stay at Roche Harbor starting Sep 3rd with family and then the Bremerton GTG Sep 10-12.

Fun on the waters and being with friends and family -- things cannot get better than that, now can they ?

Gill's spirits will be lifted for sure.

So without reading up on this -- what's the flag flying etiquette when a US registered boat is in Canadian waters ? Thanks... 🙂

Barry,
The US flag should be flown from the stern of your vessel. It's size is determined by the length of the vessel. A simple formula is one inch in length of the flag for every foot in length for the vessel. You can fly the smaller Canadian courtesy flag from your mast on top.

Now, that being said, I fly the US flag at the top of the mast with the smaller Canadian flag directly below it. Not the way it is supposed to be done but......

Zuma is docked at PIerre's Cove in the Broughton's... weather has been INCREDIBLE, very light wind and we've been having a great time enjoying the secluded coves for reflective time and busy marinas for catching up on dock gossip. We've just sent the kids off on Kenmore Air. Lyman will sit down this evening and offer some hints on what's been helpful for us to have onboard... if you have specific questions please feel free to ask and he'll address them tonight.

Wish you were here!

Just a few things to think about for all of you cruising north to Desolation Sound.

Make sure you have 200-400' of floating line for stern ties. Desolation is stern tie anchoring in many places. Buy a cheap garden hose reel at Home Depot and strap it to your swim step for the line to pay out from. Easy and cheap storage for the line and easy to retrieve line from shore tie.

Drinking water is hard to come by in Desolation. Consider buying two or three collapsable water containers (5 gal.) from Campers World or West Marine and carry them full on your foredeck. Easy to pour into your main tank and easy to store when empty.

Don't forget crab and shrimp pots if you are so inclined and bring plenty of bait as it is expensive up there. Shrimp pot line should be at least 300' and pots should be weighted. 50-60' for Crab.

Think about garbage. Few (one) places to dump in Desolation. Store food with as little packaging as possible. Beer cans and soda cans compress easily versus glass. Carry a few heavy duty garbage bags to store sealed garbage on deck or on the cabin roof.

Fresh fruit can be kept for several days in the green plastic bags (Debbie Meyer brand) available at Walmart or the like. Will keep bananas or avacados for a week or more.

I will add other things later as I think of them.

Walmart; $5.78 each

Take Crackers etc out of the box. Plastic drinking water bottles also take up a tremendous amount of space. Don't use disposable dishes.

Hi to all ! Two weeks today you will all hopefully be crossing the tranquil waters of Georgia Strait making your way to Gibsons.
The marina in Gibsons is in need of confirmation from all who require a slip for Aug 21. As of today I have confirmation from the following:
Karma, Nellie Too, That's It, Laxey, Harbor Ranger and Sea Sweeper. Those of you who are in need of a slip need to let me know ASAP to ensure a spot since the Gibsons Marina is packed during the summer.
A navagation note or 2 for all. The Saturday morning you are departing Poets is perfect for transiting the Pender Canal since there is a high tide at approx. 9:00 am. Weather will determine which pass you will want to take into Georgia Strait. Your 3 options in order of proximity to Poet's are; Active Pass;Porlier Pass;Gabriola Pass-all require a "current table" check and a read thru your Wagoner/Dreamspeaker. Karma and I will be in touch reagarding the sea conditions in Georgia Strait and your best "pass" option into the big water as we get closer to the day.Once you enter into Georgia Strait you want to set your auto-pilot/GPS for just West of Home Island, which is due South of Keats Island. To get into Gibsons Marina you want to go thru Shoal Channel whci is between Home Island and the mainland. Your auto-pilot in the "guide to" mode will want to take you around the back side of Keats Island to get into Gibsons. This is the LONG route and not required. While Shaol Channel is shallow, if you stay CENTRE CHANNEL, you will have a min. of 10 feet of water under you, based on the 7 foot tide you have that afternoon. Upon entering the breakwater in Gibsons, you will want to head to the left ( port ! ) for the Gibsons Marina docks. Inside the breakwater to the right are the Goverment docks.
Regarding provisioning, your stop in Gibsons will be your best place and cheapest for fuel, groceries, and liquor. Once you head North from here your options will be limited and MUCH more expensive. While our fuel dock and supermarkets are open on Sundays, our Government operated liquor stores are not. Just in case there is a Tugger who wishes to enjoy the odd beverage along the way ( once done for the day of course ! ), you will want to "re-load" the wine/beer cooler on Saturday once you get tied up in Gibsons.Kim and I are planning to offer "shuttle" service both days for those who wish to provision as well as transport to our home for dinner that evening. We are planning a casual dinner of fresh crab (hopefully), ass't BBQ, salads, etc. Please drop us a PM if you have an food alergies we need to be aware of.You are asked only to bring your adventure stories of surviving Admiralty Inlet etc.and your bocci ball skills....everything else will be provided. If the the forward vessel gives us a phone call once you are an hour out of Shoal Channel we will arrange to meet you in the marina 604-989-2424.

Dear Kim & Tim,
Blessings (29) will need a slip in Gibson. Thank you both for all your help.
Fernando and Sunny Martinez
