2013 Mini-Cruise to Fisherman's Terminal - Seattle

Now don't be stealing Capt. Mac away before he finishes our orientation on Friday in our 27.

I wouldn't dream of it... Enjoy the time with Capt. Mac's excellent mentorship... it's second to none IMO.

Would it really be okay to come down for a dockside look and a chat? We looked at our calendars (note to Canadians - this is not the same as Victoria Day this year) and thought "weekend in Seattle" Presumably you folks would be spending at least one evening at the docks, so we thought we might say hello and particularly look at the two models that we're considering, if someone wouldn't mind extending the earlier kind invitations to this location.
I'm also wondering if there's a general plan for a group type cruise at any point? I ask because I would be interested in finding a vantage point and photographing a raft o' Rangers. There's an aerial shot somewhere that looks pretty cool, and if there was interest I'd be happy to set up the camera end of a Seattle based shot. I only know the area casually (and maritime-wise not at all), so a local would need to make location suggestions to coordinate with sailing plans. Another thought would have you rounding a blustery point (West, Alki?) with me stationed on the beach, shooting as each boat in line hits the chop/rip. Just a thought and the offer goes away once we have our own Ranger 😉
I hope no one minds - I'm looking forward to this almost as much as all of you are.

John and Anne,
You are more than welcome to join us at the mini-cruise at Fisherman's Terminal, we would love to have you. If you come on Saturday, you will be able to enjoy a marvelous dinner provided by David and Maureen Baker (previous Ranger Tug owners). We are not planning a group departure from the Terminal but your offer of pictures is more than generous. You might be able to join a boat for some cruises in the lake with owners, including us. Let me know of your schedule. You can call me at (360) 293-0003.

All the best,

Bob and Nita

In case you didn't see my previous message, David and Maureen Baker have generously offered to provide the dinner for Saturday night. If you haven't had the opportunity to enjoy their provisioning for a meal, you are in for a marvelous experience.
all the best,
Bob and Nita

Thanks very much. I had heard of the dinner, but completely missed the Lake Washington reference in earlier posts. At any rate, that weekend is just a regular weekend in my world, and Saturday is the busy culmination of a long work week. The best that we could do is to attempt to meet at your departure on Sunday. I say attempt, because although I am prompt in the extreme, the border seems to get in the way of the best-laid plans. I would never want to hold anyone up, so would be happy to verify arrangements as we clear customs. Failing that, Seattle's full of good things to do, and we could meet the fleet as it returned on Sunday, understanding that you likely have less-group dinner plans, and may be less inclined to hang around the dock. We're very flexible and not the least bothered if schedules don't work, though I would be curious to hear where folks' Sunday plans will take them.
I'll watch this thread and contact you, Bob and Nita, a couple of weeks before the date. I thank you so much for your hospitality.
John and Anne

Bob and Nita have secured a deal on the Burgee Guidebook, which they will be offering at the Points North Seminar and this Mini-Cruise. Thanks to them for making them available to us for $20 including TTL. Normally they sell for $26.95 PLUS TTL. Just one of many selfless things they do for the Ranger Tug community. THANKS, Bob and Nita. 😀

Please add Bella to the list coming from SaltSpring. We take delivery of our new R31 in 2 weeks so this will be good timing.

David,Joanna and Angus

David and Joanna,
Nita and I are currently in Orlando and will return on Thursday. We will add you to the list when we return and publish a new list.
Bob

Good morning everyone.

We are back from our trip to Orlando and Atlanta and are now working again on the mini cruise to Fisherman's Terminal. If you are planning on attending, please send us a PM giving us your email address. We would like to contact the group via email and not through Tugnuts about the logistics of the cruise, agenda, etc.

Thanks,
Bob and Nita

If you are on the list for the mini cruise and you haven't sent us a private message giving us your email address, please do so. Or, you may send us an email to bnostlund@frontier.com . We will be communicating cruise information via email and not through Tugnuts.

With less than two months away, we are busy finalizing plans for the three day weekend. An agenda will be arriving within the month via your email with all of the information needed for this fun event. The weather is all set and it looks warm and sunny.

We look forward to seeing everyone.

Nita and Bob

I have an opportunity to purchase some more Burgee books from the author personally autographed. I bought 15 of them for the Points North Seminar and sold all of them. They normally retail for $30.00 including tax but if I can buy enough they are about $20.00. I need to buy a minimum of 10 so please let me know if you would like one.
The primary focus of these books is the marinas from Olympia to Port Hardy on Vancouver Island and everywhere in between. They help the boater locate Guest moorage, restaurants and services (such as fuel and pumpout) and also give you an idea of the cost of services. If you would like one, please e-mail me at "bnostlund@frontier.com".

Bob and Nita:
We plan to come up to Fisherman's Terminal on Saturday afternoon/evening. Would really like to meet fellow Ranger owners. Unfortunately, at least from the boating perspective, our daughter's college graduation is Sunday. What would be a good time to arrive? Should we plan to bring anything?

Thanks.

Bob and Meg, Just bring yourselves. We will be there from Friday thru Monday morning with the bulk of participants being there Saturday thru Monday.
Bob

Hi Bob,
Unfortunately, Chameleon (Ann & Tim) will not be able to attend the Fisherman's Terminal Mini Cruise. We hope to see you all at the Anacortes Rendezvous in September.
Ann

Hey, we are interested in the mini cruise. We have not been involved with tugnuts , so I guess we are newbies. We hope there is room for us. Our boating has been mostly in the San Juans and really don't have a clue about the locks and moorage.

I've been pondering on negotiating the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks on our way to Fisherman's this coming week. I will be handling the boat through the locks single handed. I know I can do this easily using the small 80' wide lock as it has moving walls that move with the boat as the lock fills or empties. One simply holds onto the moving wall using hands or a line. The large lock will either be with the boat alongside the wall (nasty barnacles to deal with) and two people typically will be required to keep the boat secure. Rafting is also a possibility and again more than likely is made easier with two people on board, plus you need 2 50' lines to throw to the lock attendants.

My question is, what is the typical period between the large and small locks opening. I'm thinking if the green light comes on for the large lock, just how long can I expect before the green light comes on for the small lock ? Do the locks operate in opposite directions at same time... that is, while the large lock is lifting boats is the small lock lowering boats ?

Also, is it true that large boats take priority for entering the lock first when the light turns green ?

Don't forget you are also escorting total newbies through the locks. 🙂 I'd much rather use the small lock, and I think we'd be early enough to do it. We were watching the locks a few weekends ago and they were opening the small lock for only one boat. So assuming its not busy we should be good... As Sunny is well practiced at saying "it'll be fine. Everything is fine.", as she flies by the seat of her pants... 😉

Hi All,
We will be sending an e-mail out to the participants probably later today with contact information and other items.

Barry, they will not let you go through the locks (even the small one) without securing the bow and stern with lines secured to the float. There will be help for all who need it and make sure to bring two 50' lines incase you go through the large lock without rafting (unlikely). I will bring two lines when I meet the boats. When you are an hour out call us at (206) 9322-450, we will meet you at dock "X" at the north end of Shilshole Bay Marina.

Bob

Just FYI, I negotiated the locks this weekend twice singlehanded and was instructed to the large locks, IMHO the large is as easy, if not easier since the size of our boats almost certainly will result in you rafting up to a larger boat. Now not only do you have fenders on both vessels but also helping hands with lines.

So in short, small or large lock is easily navigated, all you have to do is pay attention and listen to instructions. And I say this as a novice boater with only having my tug for about a month.

Looking forward to meeting you all.
