2013 Mini-Cruise to Fisherman's Terminal - Seattle

Don't forget you are also escorting total newbies through the locks. 🙂 I'd much rather use the small lock, and I think we'd be early enough to do it. We were watching the locks a few weekends ago and they were opening the small lock for only one boat. So assuming its not busy we should be good... As Sunny is well practiced at saying "it'll be fine. Everything is fine.", as she flies by the seat of her pants... 😉

Paul & Sunny: From last years experience it will be best to dock in at Shilshole where we can have someone board our boat at Dock X. you two will be just fine as there are two of you and if we use large lock you can raft/attach to my boat. I did this last year and it was totally successful. Bob (Nellie Two) came with me and handled one end (the bow of course) of our boat. We will use either lock which ever shows their green light first. Be sure to have 2 50' lines just in case. They need not be expensive lines... just something to temporally to hold you while your in the lock. The 2x 50' lines are needed in the large lock only if you're against the wall, otherwise you will be rafted and rise up or lower down with the boat you're rafted to.

Weather isn't looking good for Wed/Thu this coming week, plus we are in the midst of having significant minus tides at Edmonds... I think the one on Friday morning is at -2.6 feet at low tide! Weather permitting my plan is to leave Edmonds at close to 9am as we can with the tide level at close to 0.0. Tide will reverse just before 11am.

Ok, 9am it is, Barry. Perhaps our brains will be better one hour closer to when our orientation stopped. 🙂

Paul:

I plan on being at the Edmonds trailer lift at 8:30am Thursday to see your TugBug dropped (I mean lowered... launched) into the water... I checked with the Edmonds Ops office the other day and they indicated the small lift would be used as the 50 ton Travel Lift is an overkill, plus there was no reservation under Kenny Marr's name or yours for it. Tide level will be close to 0.0 feet at around 9am, so it will be an extra 12 feet or so for lowering your R-21EC compared to high tide.

If you dock at the Guest dock be aware that those docks don't have shore power as the whole Edmonds Guest dock area is being re-wired due one of the power pedestals exploding a month or so back... caused by some Gin Palace having a wonky shore power cord... :!:

The pump-out device on the fuel dock is very new. It pumps out my 30 gallon tank in around 30 seconds. It's very powerful...

BTW... The small lift (the one south of the Ops office) will undergo an upgrade in October this year to allow boats weighing up to 10,000 lbs to be serviced. Edmonds was awarded funds for this. This is very good news as this means R-25s can use that smaller lift at much less cost than for the 50 ton Travel Lift which is very spendy. Of course if you want the boat taken to the yard for work the only option is for using the Travel Lift. The smaller lift is for off-loading/loading from/to a trailer.

Paul: Here's another tip for your stay at Edmonds Marina. They organize day slip rentals to people for slips that are vacant. At this time of year especially, loads of day fisherman and their boats clamour for keeping their boats in the water for early departures and they always are looking for short term slips. Whenever I cruise I tell the Ops desk the nights I'm going to be away and invariably they rent out my slip for some of the days. It shows up in the monthly invoice as a credit. If you can remember, tell Ops office about your visit to Fisherman's this coming week end and nights away... if they do rent out your slip it will more than likely cover your fuel costs for the weekend. 😀 The Ops desk is very fair about how they rent out people's slips on a rotating base... just don't leave your shore power cord behind, or your water hose and sprayer as they might walk off... 🙁

N.B. Be sure the Ops desk note your nights away in their computer system.

The first three Ranger Tugs passed through the Small Ballard Locks this morning and are securely moored along Dock 8W. Nellie Too, Cascadia, and Willie's Tug await the rest of the contingent's arrival. Destiny came over this morning...such a long trip David had putting over from Stemson Marina.

Yea... TugBug (Paul & Sunny) and Laxey (Gill & Barry) will head down there tomorrow leaving at around 9am from Edmonds. This will be Paul & Sunny's first cruise in their R-21EC which was delivered to them at Edmonds this morning at 8:30am. A first for the R-21EC, their Volvo D-31 30 HP looked and sounded sweet.

We loved meeting up with so many of you at Fisherman's terminal today. We wish we were joining you for the rest of the Memorial Day weekend. But we are sure we will be having an equally great experience in Des Monies with Kenney teaching us the ins and outs of our new Ranger Tug 27.

Meanwhile, though, meeting and having a chance to talk with so many of you today was (as we expected) terrific.

An extra big thanks to Nita and Bob for all of the hard work that went into organizing this weekend's mini-cruise. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet other Ranger owners, get ideas, and enjoy just being on the water. The scavenger hunt on the lake was really fun, and would be great any time of year and is something we might do again with out-of-town guests. We'll have to go back later and do the scavenger hunt around the terminal.

Barry, thanks so much for escorting us on TugBug's maiden voyage! 🙂

I've posted a bunch of pictures on Flickr. Feel free to view and download.

See you all again soon!

Great pictures Sunny, thanks.....they are restricted though, did not seem to be able to download. You guys looked great ahead of us doing the locks. They sure had you tucked in tight.

Here is a link to our Summer May2013 Album on Picassa Web. If you see a picture you like, you should be able to right click and download. Let me know if it works or not.

The last two thirds of the pictures are from the Fisherman's Terminal mini cruise, the first third is us getting there.

When viewing the photos, if you click the three dots icon along the lower right corner of the picture, then "View all sizes." From the next screen, you can view the different sizes and download the image in whichever size you like. The pictures of your boat in front of Discovery Park are some of my favorites!

We were really squeezed in that front corner. A puzzle to be assembled indeed!

We have posted our photos and log notes from the cruise in our blog: www.bioaquatics.com/hokukai
Enjoy!

Wish we could have been there, next year for sure. We took official possession of our boat and Friday was spent with Capt. Mac. Nudibranch passed us as we were doing our docking training in Anacortes. We of course will get the chance to meet everyone on the big cruise in July.
