PNW 2011 Ranger Rendezvous - single topic

Lee & Sally - Your boat is #51 and counting. I now have your contact info on my master list. Watch for more details to come in the next few weeks. Do you know which day you'll be arriving?

Laurie

Friday's theme at the Rendezvous is sharing ideas, lessons and information. While Saturday's theme is workshops and presentations by vendors, on Friday we want to have opportunities on the dock, in the conference room for topics that span a range of topics and attracts a wide span of interest.

The format is simple: 45 minutes for a topic, a volunteer facilitator starts the forum with a brief introduction or more and the participants take the conversation where they want to. There may be multiple topics happening at the same time with something for everyone.

This is the participation part of this thread: put you whims, wishes, contributions and ideas that you would like to see as a topic for a forum.

To spur your thinking, here are some ideas:

Velcro, snaps, and boxes; ideas of ways to use these for storage & fun
Baking on the BBQ; great food without an oven
Four knots (using rope) that every Ranger owner should master
Menu planning in 21-29 feet
Two weeks and two sacks of garbage, how is that possible?
Galley gear; what works and what gets left at home
Modifications that made my Ranger better
The best tools that I carry along
Living in the world of 12 volts
Internet and cell phone coverage: getting the biggest bang for the buck

45 minute presentations of great trips:
“Princess Louisa, Barkley Sound & the Broughton Islands”
“Sea of Cortez”
“Lake Powell”
“North of Cape Caution”
“South Sound”
“Favorite Puget Sound stops”
“Gulf Islands”
“Victoria, Sidney, and points north”

So, now add your wisdom and thoughts. We need facilitators for topics and this does NOT mean that you have to be a master public speaker or have a professional PowerPoint show. Rather, it means that you are willing to start a conversation with a group of great people who are interested.

What next? In a week or so, I will take all these ideas and craft a survey using an on-line tool and post it here. The results of the survey will point the way to go.

OK, now start posting ideas, whims, thoughts, gifts and needs.

Thank you Laurie, we will be arriving Thursday PM or mid morning Friday. I will let you know once I see when the Friday programs begin.

Lee

Please add Sea Spirit 2.
We plan to arrive Bremerton on Friday.
We are willing to help if there is somewhere you can use us.
Thank you.

We just returned from the 2011 Desolation Sound group cruise -- and it was a wonderful experience... next year again for sure and we will do more then...

Anyhow... to the point. We left Friday harbor early this past Sunday morning. There was a slight mist leaving the harbor but was manageable with several 1000s of feet visibility. It cleared up but then as we got into the San Juan islands the fog/mist descended in real earnest leaving us with not much more than 200 feet of visibility. I understand this type of weather is quite common in this area and one cannot always get forewarned about it. Calling chan 16 for weather insights along the chosen course does not always work either as I heard several calls for help but heard nothing in reply. This weather condition yells out for us being proficient with the boats radar (if so equipped, and we do have this feature).

Boating in heavy fog that suddenly ungulfs you is quite unpleasant. We had two WA ferry boats that appeared suddenly and glided past us blasting their fog horns for all to hear. I was prepared as I could see them on my radar overlay.

Having radar is good, but I always wonder if the boats on my radar display can also see me... 😱 I had one power cruiser come out of nowhere on my port bow and thank goodness it wasn't speeding as it was able to steer away with the captain waving his hand crazily...

Sooooo, how about having a presentation on the use of radar in fog conditions...

  • -how to deal with fog conditions
-What is the fog signal for a powerboat underway, making way (moving forward through the water, with or without propulsion)? One prolonged blast every two minutes.
-basic radar operations using Garmin, Raymarine etc
-other useful ways to employ radar

I'm always interested in hearing people's bad boating experiences and what they learned from them. If there are people with all the gory details, that would be good to hear... Maybe have a period where people could ad hoc their stories etc. Would be good to have at least two ready to go with to get people thinking about their own... just an idea.

Barry,
The best thing you can do is go out on a nice sunny day and operate via radar alone. Learn what your radar is showing you when you can see it. Look at the screen, look out the windshield. Then when the fog or dark of night does set in, you will know what you are looking at.

We have done this a number of times on Karma and have always been glad when the inclement weather sets in that we have done so.

Don't let darkness of fog keep you off the water. Just learn to navigate in it. I always refer back to the story that John Grey told us of navigating in the fog to Hat Island....... Ask John about it at the rendezvous.... it is his story, it is a remarkable.

Glad to hear you and Gil had a good time this year! You both deserve it!

We now have a (drum roll please . . . . . ) grand total of 52 Ranger Tugs coming to the Rendezvous, plus factory boats, plus people just interested, plus people staying in the hotel. Wow!

Stan and Jayne: You and your boat are now on the master list. Be sure to download the registration form and send it to Kathy Wilson. We welcome all the help we can get! I'll find a job for you when you get there. See you in Bremerton.

Update on the silent auction.

People are being really creative and coming up with all sorts of auction items for this event. Baskets of great goodies, books on boating, and boat stuff are a few examples of what we have. (I don't want to give away what we have so far, but it is going to be fun and exciting.)

The auction will take place Friday evening from 5 - 8 p.m. If you bid on an item and win, you will need to pay by cash or check, not credit card. As a reminder, proceeds from this event will go to support the Ranger Tug/Cutwater Rendezvous in 2012 and the Sea Scouts. The split will be 50/50.

Again we want to remind you that we would like each boat to bring an auction item. Let’s be creative and come up with some fun items to auction off. Stop by your favorite marina, kitchen store, marine store, etc. and find something that people can use on their boat. Think about an item that you use on your boat that makes life a bit easier on the water.

If you already know of an auction item you want to bring to the rendezvous, please send me a PM that includes the item description and value. This will give me plenty of time to prepare the auction forms. Of course, you can always wait until you get to the rendezvous to let me know what you have.

Craft fair update :!:

The craft fair is planned for Saturday. We will have tables provided for you and all you have to do is to bring your items to sell. It is that easy. It will be fun to see the artistic talent people have outside of boating.

If you are planning on participating, please let me know so I can have enough tables available.

Currently there are four Tug owners that I have on the list as needing a hotel room. They are as follows:
Name: Tug Name: Model: Arrival Depart

Bob and Dil Pisani Hercules R-21 9/8/11 9/11/11
Ted and Carol Whittier Claret Tug R-21
Frank and Kaye My Presious R-27 9/9/11 9/12/11

If I do not have the above information correct, please let me know. I also need to know which days you plan to arrive and depart if it is not noted.

We currently have five more rooms available. If you are in need, please let me know in order to get you added to the list. The week of the rendezvous, you will need to contact the hotel and give them your credit card information to secure your reservation. Please do not do so until then.

Thanks for organizing a great party. To legitimize our intent, Kaye and I will be coming to the Rendezvous, (unfortunately, without our tug, "My Precious"), and staying from Thursday night to Monday morning. As we won't be with our boat we will not need a slip but will need the Hampton Inn for those inclusive nights. The check for registration is "in the mail". Can't wait!

I saw your name on the Hampton list, we are glad you are coming, I have put you on our list and as soon as I receive your registration, I will email a note letting you know I received it. We look forward to meeting you. We stayed in the Hampton Inn (boat less) last year and had a great time. This year we have our new boat. See you soon.

Sandi and I had the pleasure of attending the 2011 Cdory / Ranger Tug rendezvous on the Chesapeake this year. We were the only Ranger Tug present and enjoyed meeting new friends. We are hoping to bring the excitment of the PNW rendezvous to the Chesapeake next year. So, we will be joining the 2011 PNW Ranger Rendezvous on Saturday albeit without our boat, Shared Dream which is safely moored at Shady Oaks Marina, Shady Oaks, MD. We will not need accomodations, as we will be coming over for the day on the Ferry. We look forward to reconnecting with all of you.
Best Regards
Ken & Sandi Dalgleish

Wow! We look forward to seeing you. Do you have other means of transportation in receiving your margarita drink?
Do you want to borrow our dinghy?????

Nita and Bob

Just a reminder, if you are in need of a room at the Hampton Inn for the rendezvous, please send David Baker a private message through tugnuts. Going directly through David is a lot cheaper vs. making your own reservations at the Inn.

Greetings, Jim and Buzzy Callard with their Ranger Tug 29, Carpe Diem will attend. We will need a slip for Friday and Saturday night.

Thank you!
